SSP Shrestha gets last chance for clarification

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, March 20: The Police headquarters on Wednesday issued a final notice to suspended SSP Raviraj Shrestha, who was involved in foreign currency haul at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on Oct 5, to furnish clarification.

A minister level meeting on Friday had sought final clarification from SSP Shrestha after he failed to come up with convincing clarification. The police headquarters has decided to sack SSP Shrestha while not disqualifying him for any government post in future.

On Oct 31, the home ministry had written to the police headquarters to suspend Shrestha for three months, but the suspension was extended for two more months due to delays in investigation. SSP Shrestha has denied involvement in the currency haul.

SSP Shrestha was the deputy security in-charge and DIG Narayan Bastakoti security in-charge at the airport when the incident took place.

After the three-member high level probe panel headed by AIG Bhisma Prasai expressed dissatisfaction over his written and oral clarification, the committee had recommended departmental action against Shrestha.

A head constable and Shrestha´s driver Sovit Karki, who is serving jail term now, later confessed that he was used for transporting illegal currencies under the instruction of SSP Shrestha. An Indian national Binod Kumar Soni was held at the TIA while trying to smuggle foreign currencies worth Rs 12.4 million to Dubai.
