  Shrestha, Lama clinch gold medals

KATHMANDU, March 15: Bishnu Shrestha and Bijay Lama claimed gold medals in the 39th National Lumbini Karate Championship being held in Mailawar, Rupandehi on Friday.

Shrestha of Armed Police Force (APF) defeated Rabindra Dahal of Nepal Police on the basis of superiority in the final of men´s 55kg kumite. The competitive final ended with the scores tied at 3-3 but the judges decided in favor of Shrestha.

Earlier, Shrestha had defeated 11th South Asian Games gold medalist and national team player Sunil Lama in the quarterfinal. Shankar Sunuwar of Mahakali zone and Mani Kumar Sunuwar of Nepal Army secured bronze medals in the event.

Likewise, Bijay Lama of the national team edged past Sonam Lama of Bagmati zone 9-5 in the men´s 50kg final.

In the women´s 45kg kumite final, Ramila DC of University Sports Association Nepal (USAN) defeated Ishwari Thapa of APF to take gold. Pabitra Shrestha of Lumbini zone and Nirmala Tamang of Nepal Police claimed bronze medals in the weight category.

Parshuram Bastola of the national team won the men´s individual kata. Bastola outclassed Suvash Karki of Nepal Army 5-0 in the final. Bikash Moktan (Bagmati zone) and Anil Tamang (USAN) claimed bronze medals.

In the women´s individual kata, Chanchala Danuwar of the national team clinched gold. She defeated Jyoti Giri of Bagmati zone 5-0 in the final. Pushpa Gurung (Lumbini zone) and Jini Subba (Koshi zone) had to settle for bronze medals in the event.

The national team, which comprised Subhadra Shrestha, Sangita Dangol and Suman Lama, won gold medal in women´s team kata. The national team defeated the Mechi zone team 5-0 in the final.

Meanwhile, the national team and APF reached the final of men´s team kata. The national team comprises Kedar Bahadur Simkhada, Ganesh Bahadur Thing and Mandekaji Shrestha while the APF team includes Narayan Datta Pant, Shatrudhan Rana and Gopiram Ghale.

In the women´s 50kg kumite, Anu Adhikari of the national team and Roji Nagarkoti of APF secured berths in the final. Likewise, national team player Binod Maharjan and Mohan Karki of APF reached the final of men´s 60kg kumite.
