KATHMANDU, Feb 11: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Monday appointed Prof Jaya Narayan Shah as the new Vice chancellor (VC) of Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS).
Prime Minister Bhattarai, who is also the chancellor of PAHS, appointed Shah, the most senior doctor at the surgery department of the hospital, on the basis of recommendation made by a committee led by Health Minister Rajendra Mahato.
The Mahato-led committee had also proposed the names of Dr Srijana Shrestha and Dr Shri Krishna Giri.
Shah´s appointment comes in response to the demand of the employees, doctors and students at PAHS that the government appoint new VC from among senior professors of the institution.
"Over 700 employees had recommended Shah´s name for new VC," said Dr Srijana Shrestha, who was also in the race to become VC. "The appointment comes as per the sentiments of agitating employees."
Talking to Republica after his appointment, Dr Shah said that he will work as per the sprit and motto of the PAHS.
Earlier, employees and health workers at Patan Hospital had launched protest against the appointment of Sangita Bhandari as the VC of the hospital.
Bowing to the pressure, PM Bhattarai formed a probe committee which was headed by Dr Shiva Kumar Rai.
The report submitted by the committee had recommended the sacking of VC Bhandari.
Dr Pravin Mishra, secretary of Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), and Suresh Man Shrestha, secretary of Ministry of Education (MoE), were other members of the committee.
