Domestic turns out to be kidnapper

KAMAL PARIYAR

KATHMANDU, Feb 5: Some 24 hours after she was kidnapped by a domestic from Devinagar-10 of Kathmandu, 4-year-old Chayot Thamsunghang Limbu was traced to Raxaul, the Indian border town.

But police could not nab the kidnapper-Anjali Chaudhary - as she sensed that she was about to be arrested, according to the police.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bhim Dhakal, head of Metropolitan Police Circle, New Baneswor, said that Chaudhary, 29, who had joined the Limbu family as a domestic two weeks ago, had taken the girl outside the house under the pretext of seeking treatment for her by a shaman.

Anil Thamsunghang Limbu of Fidim-1 Paanchthar, father of the girl, reported to police when he noticed that his daughter was missing.

Although a police circular was sent to every station and check-point, police couldn´t locate where the girl was taken.

But when the girl´s father got a call from Chaudhary using the number 9813823990, police traced her location through the call details.

DSP Dhakal said Chaudhary demanded Rs 500,000 as ransom and threatened to kill the child if her father informed police.

He said a team of plain-clothes police then reached the location near Birgunj along with the girl´s father. The latter approached the location with the ransom money. The girl was kept in a small hut near Raxaul bazaar.

Plain-clothes police had surrounded the area with the help of local police but the kidnapper was able to escape, leaving the girl in the hut where she had been hidden for hours, police said. The owner of the hut expressed unawareness about what was going on, according to police.
The recovered girl was in poor health.

Nepal police have tried to get the kidnapper arrested with the help of Indian police but to no avail so far.

“According to some documents left in the house, the kidnapper has been identified as an Indian, but investigations are still under way,” police said. According to family sources, Chaudhary worked at a doctor´s residence at Maitidevi before she joined the Limbu family.

Police have arrested three people on the charge of involvement in the kidnapping.

The kidnapped girl´s father hired Chaudhary as a domestic as his wife was working in the Gulf, police said.

The girl was brought home on Sunday night.
