KATHMANDU, Feb 1: Siblings Mahika and Malika Rana on Friday advanced into the women´s singles semifinals of Fifth APF Open Lawn Tennis Championship being held at the APF covered hall in Halchowk.

Mahika of Laliptur edged past Ira M Rawat of Kathmandu 6-3, 7-6 and Malika recorded a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win over Pritika Manandhar of Lalitpur. Bibhuti Karki of Laliptur saw off Anne Mathema of Lalitpur 6-1, 6-3 while Ganga Sharma of Pokhara enjoyed a walkover to secure a semifinal spot.

In the men´s doubles category, Pradeep Shah and Amulya Singh´s pair edged past Sanjay Jha and Niranjan Shrestha´s pair 6-4, 6-2. Meanwhile, Durja Kumar Rai, Durga Bahadur Kunwar of host APF, Sinjar Kunwar of Nepal Army and Pradip Shah won their respective men´s singles matches in the inter-governmental service category.

Meanwhile, the Ninth Nationwide Krishna Mohan Memorial Open Badminton Championship also featured competitions in different categories at the APF premises on Friday. In the men´s singles section, Bikash Shrestha of Bhojpur defeated Deepak Bohara of Police 21-13, 21-16, Indra Mahato of APF downed his colleague Joseph Adhikari 21-17, 21-10, Pankaj Chand of APF beat Bijeet Thapa of Police 21-8, 21-10, Deepesh Dhami of the host saw off Sudip Sedhai of the same team 18-21, 21-11, 21-18. All the winners booked quarterfinal berths.

The other players to reach the last eight were Sajan Krishna Tamarakar of Police, Ratnajit Tamang of APF and Bishnu Katuwal of Police.

In the U-17 men´s singles category, Ashis Thapaliya of Police, Deepesh Dhami of APF, Pranish Thakuri of Jhapa, Sachin Dangol of Lalitpur, Sawan Shrestha of Sunsari, Suman Limbu of APF, Santosh Khadka of Bhojpur and Nir Bikram Devkota of Kathmandu advanced into the quarterfinals winning their respective matches.

Meanwhile, the pairs of Akash Chhantyal and Raju Bajracharya, Tirtha Malla and Purna Thapa, Sudip Budhathoki and Rakesh Singh, and Suman Limbu and Dil Bahadur Dhami reached the round of 16 winning their respective men´s doubles matches.

Likewise, the pairs of Bishal Pradhan and Ratnajeet Tamang, Sudip Sedhai and Ramesh Sherpa, Khem Gurung and Sunil Barahai, Santosh Moktan and Hari Tamang, Santosh Singh and Kamal Shrestha, and Jeetendra Sharma and Mangal Gurung also secured pre-quarterfinal berths.
