A hill station located about 24 kilometers northwest from Kathmandu, a hike to Kakani can take you away from the hustle bustle of the city and help you refresh and rejuvenate. The destination is famous for its breathtaking scenery and a popular for day hiking. And if you’re interested, you can extend your hike to more days!

Getting there
You can either get to Kakani by private or public vehicle. Public vehicles to Kakani can be taken from various bus stops at Kalanki. You’ll need to get off at Kaulinthana. It takes an hour to reach there by private vehicle while public vehicles take longer.

The Kakani hike begins from Kaulinthana. Three kilometers of uphill walk will take you to Kakani.

Hike highlights
You can experience the mountain landscape around the capital, including the views of the majestic peaks stretching from Ganesh Himal to the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. You can also enjoy mountain scenery while walking on the trail. Wild rhododendrons growing on the mountain slopes during late winter increase the charms of the trail.

With beautiful views throughout, Kakani is also a destination for cycling. It’s also one of the favorite spots for picnic for the Valley’s denizens. Famous for trout and strawberry farming, you can also taste the local treats during appropriate seasons. Kakani has also traditionally been famous for its succulent radish for Kathmandu’s vegetable and pickle consumers.

Apart from the interesting forest hike through oak, rhododendron and pine forest, you can also visit the Thai Airways Memorial Park dedicated to the 113 passengers of the flight that crashed nearby during bad weather. Another landmark is the International Mountaineers Memorial Park on the southern side of the village. You can also catch up your breath in the park and enjoy the view of the Kathmandu Valley while relaxing on the nearby benches.

And if you want to experience better views of sunrise and sunset, you can also decide to stay overnight at a good hotel.

Weather
The weather is chilly at this time of the year. Since you need to walk through pine forests, it’s wise to walk after the warm morning sun is up.
