PM Bhattarai: Dahal jokingly said he could be new PM
KHAGENDRA ADHIKARI
TAPLEJUNG, Jan 22: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Tuesday ruled out any possibility of party UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal becoming the new prime minister anytime soon.
Bhatttarai, who is the vice-chairman of the party, claimed that Dahal´s affirmation during a party meet in Gorkha on Monday that he wanted be PM was actually not true. "He (Dahal) jokingly said that he could be PM," Bhattarai maintained.
He told this to reporters in Taplejung, where he has come along with Dahal to inaugurate the party’s first district convention.
On the occasion, Bhattarai said since he is an elected PM and also there is currently no legitimate body (parliament), none of the other leaders from the major political parties can lead a new government.
“I was elected prime minister by the legitimate body,” he said. “It is less of who should lead the government to give an outlet to the country, and more of how we can have that legitimate institution, again.”
He also said it is imperative that new elections be held by mid-May, and added that his government is committed to institutionalizing political gains achieved so far.
Likewise, Bhattarai blamed the prolonged political crisis on the opposition parties for ‘ their tendency to oppose everything acts of his government’. Both Bhattarai and Dahal are scheduled to leave for Okhaldhunga from Taplejung.
