  Newa culture reflects distinct identity: PM

KATHMANDU, Dec. 28: Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has said that Newa culture stands as a distinct identity of Nepal.

Speaking at a program organized by Jyapu Culture Development Trust to mark the Ninth Jyapu Day here on Friday, Prime Minister Bhattarai said the Government is committed to advancement and development of Newari culture, which is an indigenous heritage of Nepal.

Making his address in Newari, Dr Bhattarai said, "Our country is rich in diverse caste, religion and culture and thereby stands as a unique model of bio-diversity, natural heritage and social fabric."

He also lauded the significant contribution of the Jyapu community in preserving the Newari culture, heritage, costume and tradition.

Dr Bhattarai stressed the need to draft a constitution from the Constituent Assembly that addresses the diversity identity of Nepal.

Nepali Congress leader and Patrol of the Trust, Tirtharam Dangol said the Newar community has lagged behind due to lack of access to state power and claimed important contribution of the Newar community in the field of art and culture.

Chairperson of the Trust Chakraman Dangol called for assistance of the Government in observing the Jyapu day.

At the program, the Prime Minister felicitated 21 personalities in recognition of their contribution to the advancement and promotion of Jyapu culture.

A variety of culture programme was presented on the occasion.

Earlier, a cultural rally that began from Bhalanani (brahmatole) in Kathmandu metropolis-12 passed through Hyumat, Kohiti, Maru, Pyafak, Thayamaru, Ason, Ratna park, Mahankal and New road before converging into a mass meeting at Basantapur square.
