KATHMANDU, Nov 9: President Ram Baran Yadav on Friday urged UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to take concrete and result-oriented initiatives to settle the budget row and the political impasse.
In a series of meetings with ruling as well as opposition leaders, the president sought the ruling party chief´s role in ending the standoff between the ruling and opposition sides.
Dahal said the head of state was seriously concerned on how to solve the budget row as the leaders from 19 opposition parties have asked the president in writing not to approve budget ordinance if brought without their consent.
"He is eagerly awaiting agreement among the political parties on the budget row by Saturday," Dahal told reporters while emerging from the president´s office at Shital Niwas on Friday.
During the meeting, Dahal briefed the head of state about the negotiations among the major political forces.
The meeting between the president and the chairman of the ruling UCPN (Maoist) has taken place at a time when some key leaders from the UCPN (Maoist) and Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun, among others, have publicly accused the president of trying to topple the present government and take over power.
"He wants nothing more than consensus among the political forces," Dahal clarified.
Earlier on Thursday, leaders from 19 opposition parties had asked the president in writing not to approve a budget ordinance if the government forwards it without political consensus.
Within hours after the opposition leaders submitted their letter to the president, the head of state also discussed the matter with the prime minister.
The prime minister said he briefed the president about the government initiatives and assured him that budget will be brought in consensus among the major political forces.
Meanwhile, Dahal speaking at the re-launching of Everest Toothpaste in the capital on Friday urged the opposition parties not to stop budget saying that budget concerns the entire people and not any particular political party.
