ITAHARI, Nov 9: A total of 12 jailbirds have fled from the custody of the Jhumka-based eastern regional prison in Sunsari district early Friday morning.
They escaped from the prison through a tunnel some 40 ft long that they dug to make their way out. Nepalis, Bangladeshis and Indians are among the jail breakers.
The jail breakers have been identified as Ramesh Yadav, Binaya Yadav, Dinash Yadav alias Bambam, Dhirendra Yadav alias Mukhiya, Subash Yadav, Subash Jha, Sarfaraj Alam, Ramshe Sarda, Faruk Miya, Mamata Miya, Jakir Miya and a Bangladeshi national, Ali Asraf.
They were serving jail term for their involvement in various criminal cases.
Bangladeshi national Ali, who had been serving time for citizenship certificates forgery, was assigned the task of watchman inside the prison.
A total of 618 inmates were in the prison. The prison administration has refused to speak about the incident.
