  Patan Hospital tense after agitators-police clash

KATHMANDU, Nov 8: Tension gripped Patan Hospital following police intervention as the agitating doctors and staff at the hospital tried to padlock the office of Vice-Chancellor (VC) on Thursday morning.

Tension broke out at the hospital after the hospital administration called the police to avert proposed program to padlock the VC’s office by the agitating doctors and staffs.

Police resorted to baton charge at the agitators to take the situation under control. Several agitating MBBS students have also been injured in the incident, Dr Srijana Shrestha, a professor, head of the department of Child Health Division and a member of struggle committee, informed.

“We were carrying out agitation through peaceful means but scuffle begun as police prevented us to padlock the VC’s office as part of scheduled protest program against ‘unilateral’ appointment of VC and Rector at PAHS, “said, Dr Shrestha talking to Republica Online.

Meanwhile, agitators have padlocked the VC’s office amid tension.

Agitating doctors and staffs have demanded resignation of Dr Sangita Bhandari and Dr Soumya Bhattacharya from their posts as VC and Rector respectively.

Doctors and staffs at the PAHS have been launching different agitation programs protesting the government´s appointment of  Dr Bhandari and Dr Bhattacharya.

The struggle committee vowed to continue their an hour long sit-in from 10:00 am to 11:00 am till they said VC and Rector tender their resignations. The doctors and health workers had been demonstrating at the hospital premises since last Thursday.

Dr Bhattacharya was former head of the department of anatomy, while Dr Bhandari former head of the department of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) at the Dharan-based BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS).
