Tainted ex-Maoist lawmaker expelled from party

MANOJ ADHIKARI

POKHARA, Nov 8: Ex-Maoist lawmaker Safik Miyan, who has been absconding after being charged with sexually exploiting a minor girl, has been expelled from his party.

Jhalak Pani Tiwari, Kaski district in-charge of the UCPN (Maoist), said Miyan has been expelled after an internal inquiry by the party found him guilty in various cases including sexual exploitation of the minor. The party´s Central Committee had directed its Kaski chapter to take action against Miyan after probing allegations against him.

Miyan´s house was raided by the Kaski police on Friday. A 14-year-old girl working at Miyan´s house as housemaid was rescued by the police. In her statement to the police, the girl has claimed that Miyan had first forced her into having sex with him and later coaxed her into frequently having "natural and unnatural physical relationship" by promising to marry her.

The girl´s mother has already lodged an official complaint against Miyan at the district police office. Miyan has gone into hiding since his house was raided.

A medical test conducted by the Western Regional Hospital has also confirmed that the girl had had sex in recent times. Earlier, Miyan´s wife Jubida had also revealed that she had caught her husband red-handed in compromising position with the housemaid.

After Miyan was accused of sexual exploitation, it was also revealed that Miyan sold a plot of land belonging to his wife by forging her citizenship certificate. Miyan had resorted to forgery after Jubida refused to agree on selling her land.

Miyan had also filed a complaint at the part headquarters, accusing his wife of having illicit relationship with a party cadre. “As we looked into Miyan´s allegations against his wife, we have yet not found any solid evidences to prove his claim,” Tiwari said. “We have found that Miyan´s wife and the accused had telephone conversations many times. But, merely these details of phone calls do not prove Miyan´s claim.”

Miyan had also claimed that his wife is suffering from cancer. But, the party´s investigation has found that Jubida is not suffering from any serious disease. “None of Miyan´s allegations has been proved correct,” Tiwari said. The police say a manhunt is on to nab Miyan.
