KATHMANDU, Nov 6: Amateur Dinesh Prajapati carded one-over 68 at the Royal Nepal Golf Club on Tuesday to lead the first day of the Surya Nepal Challenge, the fourth event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2012-13.
Pro golfers CB Bhandari and Rabi Khadka shared second position on the leader-board with the first round scores of two-over 69. Amateur Wangchan Dhondup and veteran Deepak Thapa Magar shared fourth position with the first round scores of four-over 71.
Ram Thapa, Mani Rai, Sanjay Lama, Deepak Neupane and amateurs Bikash Bogati and Tashi Ghale, all, submitted cards of five-over 72 to share the sixth position on Tuesday.
Leader Prajapati, an emerging golfer under the Surya Nepal NGA Youth Development Program, took a turn with two-over 35 and completed the back nine with one-under 33. Prajapati started the day with a bogey followed by even-par on the second and third hole. He, then, suffered bogeys on the fourth hole and saved par on the rest of the holes of front nine. In back nine, he carded birdies on the 10th, 11th, 13th and the 14th holes against bogey on the 16th and double-bogey on the 18th.
Meanwhile, Bhandari carded four-over 37 on the front nine and two-under 32 on the back nine. Khadka carded one-over 34 on the front nine and one-over 35 on back nine.
Defending champion Dhana Thapa, pro of the Army Officers´ Golf Club, played a terrible round of golf on Tuesday as he completed the first round with seven-over 74.
Nepal No 1 Shiva Ram Shrestha is away in India for PGTI Tournaments and he missed the tournament. The tournament will be played over 72 holes, where cut would be applied after 36 holes. Top 20 professionals and the ties as well as top nine amateurs will qualify for the final 36 holes. Altogether, 24 professionals and 20 top amateurs are taking part in the tournament.
The winner of the tournament will get a check of Rs 60,000 while the runner up will take home Rs 40,000. Others among the top 20 will also receive their share of cash prizes.
