Security tightened on border ahead of key Chinese meeting

DHRUBA DANGAL

TATOPANI, Nov 4: China has tightened security along the Nepal-China border just ahead of the National Congress of Communist Party of China that is scheduled to start Wednesday.

Starting Sunday, the Chinese administration prohibited entry to Tibet from the Tatopani checkpoint.

Chinese officials on Saturday invited Sindhupalchowk-based Nepali security officials to Khasa and requested the latter to seriously watch border activities during the days when the congress will be taking place.

"At the request of Chinese officials, we have stopped issuing temporary entry passes to Khasa for until the Congress concludes," Durga Prasad Pokharel, chief district officer in Sindhupalchowk, told Republica.

According to him, businessmen, passport holders, visa holders and those having permanent entry passes will however have no problem cross over to Tibet.

Permanent residents from the areas within 30 kilometers from the border are given permanent passes to visit Tibet. Other people from the district and tourists need to acquire temporary passes to visit Tibet. Hundreds of visitors seek temporary passes to enter into Tibet every day.

During the talks the Chinese side drew the visiting Nepali officials´ attention toward the possibility of Tibetan refugees entering Tibet to stage demonstration. "We assured the Chinese side that we will not allow any activities against Nepal´s one-China policy," said Pokharel.
