  Shakya quits as NRT coach

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Oct 17: Raju Kaji Shakya has resigned as the coach of New Road Team (NRT). Shakya, a former skipper of the Nepali national team, made such an announcement during a press meet held in the capital on Wednesday.

Shakya, 52, who took charge of NRT time and again over the last 11 years, helped NRT finish runner-up in the A division football league in 2053 BS, win the title of Budhasubba Gold Cup Football Tournament and steered NRT to the super eight of Martyrs Football League last season.

Shakya, however, promised that he will not end his relation with football. "I will try to do better with new team in future. I was associated with NRT for a long time as coach. But the club failed to give satisfactory results in the Ncell Cup Football Championship that concluded recently," said Shakya, adding, "It is the right time for coaches to quit the club on moral grounds."

Shakya also denied that he was leaving the club following differences with the club management. "I feel NRT is my own club as it has a glorious history. After working in the club for a long time I feel that I should adopt a new working style, thus I decided to quit the club."

Shakya also shared that he was in talks with Armed Police Force (APF) and Machhindra Club. "I am in talks with APF and Machhindra but I want to take charge of a departmental team. Thus there are more chances of me joining the departmental team."

Shakya, who has won the highest 68 caps for the Nepali team, made his debut in the national team at the age of 17. He was the captain of the Nepali national team for seven years.

Shakya was a member of the Nepali national team that played its first official match during the Ninth Asian Games in 1982. He played club football from Annapurna RCT, Janakpur Cigarette Factory and RNAC.
