KATHMANDU, Oct 11: In a major structural overhaul, the ruling UCPN (Maoist) on Wednesday decided to restructure the party organization into six tiers to be run by collective leadership.
A meeting of the party office bearers in the capital also decided that 2,000 party members would participate in the party´s general convention to be held from January 27.
The six tiers including cell, village, municipal, electoral constituency, district, state and central committees would have their respective councils. The councils by holding an annual general assembly would formulate the party´s programs and policies.
“The party will formally endorse the decision tomorrow [Thursday],” said party Spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota.
The committees would be run by collective leadership comprising chairman, vice-chairman, general secretary, secretary and treasurers. Earlier, the party had exercised collective leadership only in the central committee.
“The size of the committees would be fixed during the general convention and this would be mentioned in the party statue,” said Dor Prasad Upadhyaya, member of the party central secretariat.
The party has decided to hold its general convention on the scheduled date. Conventions of the lower tiers would be held on the same day so that the party does not fall behind schedule.
According to Upadhyaya, one male and a female would be selected from every 250 party members as the representative for the general convention. If there is no consensus on the selection process, a voting would be held to select representatives for the general convention.
“The representatives will be selected in such a way as to ensure inclusion of women, dalits, and people from the marginalized communities,” said Upadhyaya.
The general convention of the party is being held 22 years after Pushpa Kamal Dahal became the party chief.
