Deuba denies having called meeting for CA revival

REPUBLICA ONLINE

KATHMANDU, Oct 8: Nepali Congress (NC) senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba on Monday clarified that he did not call any meeting of former Constituent Assembly members from his party.

It was earlier reported that Deuba along with party Vice-president Ram Chandra Paudel had called the meeting to press for reinstatement of CA at a time when NC, like other political parties, has already agreed to go for fresh CA polls.

Speaking at a press meet organized by Nepal Press Union at Dhadingbesi, Deuba said he had only given assurance for his participation in such a meeting if time favors since he had been calling for CA revival.

He stressed on forging consensus on contentious issues of constitution writing prior to CA reinstatement. “A lot of time has already been wasted. To revive CA without first agreeing on the disputes is only like allowing 601 lawmakers to have financial perks," he said.

He, however, said now there is no alternative to fresh elections but insisted that even for that, CA needs to be temporarily reinstated to pass laws regarding new polls.

Deuba also downplayed internal conflict within the party and said his party will put forth the name for prime minister immediately after the current Maoist-led government steps down.

He also described PM Baburam Bhattarai as the hurdle in consensus building. “If he (the PM) still wishes to cling onto power, he will be ousted through street protest,” Deuba warned.
