Baby dies after birth in street

KALENDRA SEJUWAL

SURKHET, Sept 29: A mentally-retarded woman delivered a child on a busy road in Birendrangar of Surkhet district.

As the locals, men and women alike, gathered around the woman and just watched her, the newborn died within a few hours after birth. Even as the woman laid her baby on the street, no one bothered about taking care of the newborn. The cries of the mother and the newborn did not touch any one´s heart.

Only when Laxmi Gautam and Sarswati Acharya, who sell fruits in Birendranagar, saw the woman two hours later that she was rescued.

“As we reached there, there were many onlookers but no one was ready to touch her and the baby,” said Laxmi. “We took them to the hospital. The baby could not survive. However, we are happy at being able to save her life.”

The woman, who can´t even tell her name, is now undergoing treatment at the Mid West Regional Hospital, Surkhet.
