  Press freedom indispensable in democracy: PM

KATHMANDU, Sept 28: Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has said that press freedom is inseparable in a democratic system.

Inaugurating a three-day Photo Concern FNPJ Photo Fair organized by the National Photo Journalists Group on Friday, Prime Minister Bhattarai also said that the media is being indispensable organ of the modern society.

Stating that media sector is the power to alert the state continuously, the Prime Minister mentioned of many events in the world in which politics took different turns because of pictures published in newspapers.

He said there are challenges to take forward works in photo journalism professionally, and added that photos have high importance in making the people aware, empower them and inform well.

Stating that the role played by Nepali photo journalists in peaceful and armed movements was incomparable, Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai said nowadays a trend is increasing of taking photo shoots that the society cannot digest in the name of modeling, and added that there is a need for the photo journalists to play a key role to stop the trend.

He also suggested the photo journalists to capture photos of Nepali art, culture and nature and make Nepal known in the international arena.Similarly, Chairman of the organizing Group, Kabindraman Shakya, Vice-Chairman Hari Gopal Pradhan, Secretary Kishor Shrestha, among others, said that the Group has been working to forward photo journalism in a professional way, ensure welfare of photo journalists and its expansion and development.

On the occasion, Hari Gopal Courageous Photo Award, Eco-Tourism Award and Sports Awards established by the Group were given away to Dinesh Shrestha, Sudarshan Ranjit and Udipt Singh Chhetri respectively.

Likewise, Cultural Heritage Photo Journalism Award and Excellent Internet Award were given away to Padma Sagar Kakshyapati and Rajbhai Suwal respectively.

A total of 189 photos of 78 photo journalists reflecting nature, customs, art, among others, are put on display in the fair.

The organizers said prize will be given to the photos of visitors´ choice.
Photography workshops and different seminars related to photo journalism will also be held, it is learnt. The fair starts from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm every day.

There are different types of stalls including camera stall, training center related to photo journalism, photography school, among others.
