KATHMANDU, Sept 26: No sooner had the country’s oldest university gotten over the case of top level officials being held captive by the professors themselves, students on Wednesday protested the decision of Tribhuvan University (TU) to conduct re-examinations in Linguistics for Masters Degree level Major English on Oct. 10 following a case of question paper leak in the exam held on Sept. 9.
A group of irate students vandalized the Central Department of English (CDE) and also padlocked both the department and the Office of Exam Controller (OEC).
“A group of around six dozen students smashed glass and boards at the office,” said Amar Raj Joshi, chief of CDE.
The department has also postponed some oral exams for MPhill following the padlocking.
Joshi said that the students were divided over the re-examination, with some students feeling it was an injustice to those who did well in the Literature and Linguistics paper.
The question paper was found to be a copy of questions set by Assistant Professor Sharad Chandra Thakur for an internal exam at the university held three months ago.
Over 2,000 students had appeared in the MA first level exam this year.
“I am keeping an eye on further developments in the case as I had performed well in the exam. Such incidents are frustrating and also detract from the reputation of the university among students,” said Yam Katuwal, a student at Ratna Rajya Laxmi College who appeared in the exam.
Meanwhile, the deputy controller at OEC said the student’s agitation would not affect the decision to conduct re-exams. “Those who want to drop the exam are free to do so but it is sure to be held on October 10,” said Deputy Controller Ramesh Joshi.
Though the CDE questions were found to have been leaked for the first time, such incidents seem to occur frequently at several other wings under TU.
On August 12, it was found that questions for the engineering entrance exams being conducted by the Institute of Engineering (IoE) were leaked.
IoE had also announced fresh exams following a report issued by the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police.
Similarly, questions for the entrance exam for Doctor in Medicine (MD) under the Institute of Medicine were also leaked two years ago.
On September 20, the National Vigilance Centre had directed the university to take action against a faculty member who leaked question papers.
TU Rector Gun Nidhi Neupane said that the university administration would soon take strict action against the guilty. “The university administration is serous about discouraging such incidents,” he said.
