UML youths want corruption at Maoist cantonments probed

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Sept 21: The CPN-UML affiliated Youth Association Nepal (YAN) filed a complaint on Friday at the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) against UCPN (Maoist) demanding probe into the financial irregularities in the Maoist cantonments.

They have accused the UCPN (Maoist) of embezzling Rs 4 billion from PLA fund.

YAN delegation led by its chairman Mahesh Basnet reached the CIAA office to file the complaint and handover the “proofs” of corruption, which they claimed were strong enough to launch an official probe.

The complaint identifies Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Prime Minister and Vice-chairman Baburam Bhattarai and Maoist leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara as the people behind the corruption, according to Jhapat Rawal, vice-chairman of YAN.

Rawal said Maoists leaders had begun misusing their authority right from the time when the first Maoist government led by Dahal was formed, in which Bhattarai was the finance minister and Mahara the home minister.

YAN said that a huge amount of money was diverted to wrong hands in the name of combatants who did not even exist. According to YAN, the Maoists have misused state money by drawing salary in the names of 11 to 12 thousand fake combatants.

They claimed that the Maoist party continued to draw salaries in the name of fake combatants till the re-verification put the actual number of Maoist combatants at 19,6021.

Rawal said that the commission assured them of initiating a probe into the alleged corruption at the earliest. “We are hopeful that the accused would be brought to book and that the money misused by Maoists would be recovered,” Rawal said.

The Maoists themselves had formed a probe commission last July under the leadership of Post Bahadur Bogati to investigate the financial irregularities in the cantonments.
