Locals shut Dharan over property tax hike; 11 held

DHARAN, Sept 21: At least 11 persons have been arrested for enforcing banda in Dharan on Friday, protesting the increase in property tax imposed by the Dharan municipality.
Members of a joint struggle committee formed by the locals to protest the cumulative property tax have been rallying on the road, enforcing a total shutdown since early morning.
Suresh Niraula, Dev Limbu, Rajendra Lingden, Abhisek Thakuri, Kiran Rai, Rajendra Lama, Binod Rai, Anku Rai, Dharma Raj Pariyar, Anup Rai, Sukhdev Rai and Ratna Mani Rai have been arrested from Shyam Chowk this morning while they were enforcing the banda.
"To maintain peace and security, we had to detain them," said Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajendra Bista, of the area police office.
The Dharan municipality had revised existing property tax scheme and increased it by 15 per cent effective from August 17.
The committee members have been protesting against the tax hike and had staged a sit-in in front of the municipality office this morning.
All the marketplaces, shops and academic institutions have remained closed since this morning due to the strike. Transportation services have also come to a grinding halt.
