CHITWAN, Sept 20: A Chitwan-based businessman has pledged to donate over Rs 20 million to upgrade Bharatpur Eye Hospital and build an eye research institute.
According to Chitwan District President of Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh Chij Kumar Maskey, Mahendra Lay Pradhan, a local resident of Narayangadh, will donate Rs 20,111,111 to upgrade the hospital and build the research centre.
“We are encouraged by the announcement of such a huge donation by a single person,” said Maskey. “The research centre will be built in the next five years.” The research centre will produce all kinds of eye-specialists in Nepal.
“Once the center comes into operation, students will not need to go abroad for medical studies,” said Maskey. The sangh has also planned to upgrade the hospital to a 100-bed eye treatment centre.
The hospital, which was established 25 years ago, only has 40 beds currently. According to Maskey, they need Rs 60 million to upgrade the hospital and build the research centre.
