REPUBLICA ONLINE

KATHMANDU, Sept 12: Nepal entered into the semifinals of SAFF Women’s Championship as Group B winner after hammering Afghanistan 7-1 in its last league match, in Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

In the match played at CR & FC Grounds in Colombo, Anu Lama, Srijana Rana and Niru Thapa each netted twice for Nepal. This is Nepal’s third straight win in as many matches in the regional tournament.

For Nepal, Niru was the first strike, giving Nepal an early lead in the fifth minute, and skipper Jamuna Gurung doubled the score in the 19th minute of the match.

However, Nepal conceded a goal in a counter attack in the 42nd minute as Afghanistan player Marjan slotted the ball into Nepali goal post.

Niru added another goal during the injury time of the first half, placing Nepal ahead by 3-1 before the half time break.

In the second half, Srijana scored twice in the 47th and 72nd minutes. Anu further added two more goals in the 69th and 89th minutes of match, completing a 7-1 rout of Afghanistan.

Nepal has already made it to the last four after beating Pakistan 8-0 and Maldhives 5-0 in its first and second matches, respectively.

Skipper Gurung has so far made two hat-tricks in the 8-nation tournament, scoring four goals against Pakistan and three against the Maldives. Nepal will next play host Sri Lanka on Friday.
