REPUBLICA ONLINE

KATHMANDU, Aug 20: Nepal crashed out the Plate Championship of ICC U 19 World Cup after losing to Sri Lanka by 8 wickets during their ninth place play-off match of the tournament, in Australia on Monday.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first at Peter Burge Oval, in Brisbane, Nepal were all out for 79 in 27.3 overs. Opener Subash Khakurel top scored with 22 and Raju Pulami Magar made 16. Apart from them, no other Nepali batsman could score even in double digits.

To restrict Nepal into a low total, Tharindu Kaushal took three wickets, while Ranitha Liyanarachchi, Amila Aponso and Sanitha de Mel grabbed two wickets each.

In reply, Sri Lanka reached the target with ease losing only two wickets in 20.4 overs. For Sri Lanka, S Fernando made 48. Nepali bowler Bhuwan Karki and skipper Prithu Baskota took one wicket each.

Nepal’s score in today’s match is its second lowest total in that age-category cricket, the lowest being 74 against the West Indies in the 2008 Plate Championship final.

Nepal had suffered humiliating defeats in all the three matches in the league round of Group A--against Australia, England and Ireland.
