BIRATNAGAR, Aug 14: A team of Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) in Biratnagar has seized around Rs 3 million worth of goods such as clothes, chemicals and motor parts that were brought into the country with fake customs clearance letter.
The patrol team seized the goods on Tuesday from an area near Eye Hospital Chowk in Biratnagar.
“We can´t provide much detail now since the investigation are ongoing,” Matrika Nepal, investigation officer of the Biratnagar regional office of DRI told Republica.
“The DRI regional office suspects the involvement of the customs official in creating the fake customs clearance letter,” a source said. “However, this is yet to be established.” The goods had come into the country from the Jogbani customs point.
The DRI officials had been tipped off about the goods from the Jogbani customs point. “The team was deployed in the field as per the available information from the Jogbani customs point,” the source said.
The trend of illegal import and export of goods with fake customs clearance letter has not been controlled thought the police has been able to reduce the volume of smuggling through the Jogbani customs point lately.
“We seize the goods only if the customs clearance letter seems susceptive,” Ragav Singh Thapa, superintendent of police at the office of armed police deployed for border security said. “We can do nothing once the customs office gives clearance.”
