MAW to sell scooters from Yamaha India

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Aug 10: MAW Enterprises -- the authorized distributor of Yamaha in Nepal - is introducing scooters made by Yamaha India in the Nepali market. The company at present is selling scooters made by Yamaha China.

“Currently, we are selling only one scooter model - Mio made by Yamaha China. With the introduction of Ray, we will start selling scooters made by Yamaha India,” Suraj Manandhar, deputy general manager of Yamaha Division at MAW Enterprises, said. “We will launch Yamaha Ray by the end of the current fiscal year i.e. June next year.”

Yamaha India launched prototype of Ray concept scooter in Auto Show held at New Delhi in January. Though the company has not unveiled specifications of the scooter, it has been learnt that the scooter powered by 125cc petrol engine will produce 9 BHP of power and 8.5 nm of torque. It is expected to provide mileage of around 50 km per liter.

The scooter is expected to be available in two variants with disc and drum brakes.

According to the company, the Ray will be competing with the Honda Activa, Mahindra Rodeo, Suzuki Access, and Suzuki Swish in the Nepali market.
Officials of MAW said the launch of Ray will mark the entry of Yamaha India into the scooter segment. “If Ray does well in the market, the company will come up with other scooter models,” they said.

“We do not know how much Ray will cost in Nepal as Yamaha India is yet to disclose its technical specifications,” Manandhar said.

The scooter is expected to be priced between IRs 50,000 and IRs 55,000, according to Indian news reports.
