2nd Kathmandu International Art Festival to be held

KATHMANDU, Aug 8: The Siddhartha Arts Foundation, the organizing body of the Kathmandu Arts Festival, announced the “2nd Kathmandu International Art Festival (KIAF): Earth,Body,|Mind” during a press meet on Tuesday.

Introducing the newly born foundation, Sangeeta Thapa, Director of KIAF, said, “The Foundation arose from a need for a non-profit organization that promoted arts in Nepal beyond the confines of a gallery structure.” The mission of the Foundation is to establish Kathmandu as an international contemporary arts hub.

The Festival adopts this mission and further aims to be a triennial venue which allows for artistic collaborations and exchanges among international and local artists who will use art as a platform for critical reflection and the sensitization of the society.

The 2nd KIAF is slated to be held from November 25 to December 21, 2012 with the theme of ecology and environment. “This year, we have chosen a rather poetic title which has resonance – Earth,Body, Mind,” informed Thapa.

Festival Coordinator Sharareh Bajracharya claimed that the 2nd KIAF is by far the largest art exhibition dedicated to climate change adding that since Nepal is in so many ways, closet to the largest storage of ice, Nepal has no choice but to take a lead in this issue.

“Art can’t force people but it can change the way we think,” she said during a presentation at the press meet, adding that art can be a tool to raise awareness about what they can do on a personal level to stop environmental degradation.

The Festival will see the works of 98 international artists from 31 countries and 22 national artists who were selected from applications of over 170 international artists and 60 Nepali artists.

Paintings, photography, sculpture, installations, art performances and happenings will be exhibited at different venues including the Patan Museum, Nepal Art Council and Siddartha Art Gallery.

This non-commercial, month-long event will see events such as a three-day symposium, a children’s art workshop and a Pecha Kucha Night on artworks by selected artists.

Targeting to reach out to 50,000 people, the scale of the festival is much larger than the first KIAF. “I have every faith that the Festival will generate significant interest compared to 2009, as we are creating synergy with the Kathmandu Literary Jatra which will coincide with the 2nd KIAF,” said Thapa.
