KATHMANDU, Aug 7: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav appointed Lieutenant General Gaurav Shumsher Rana as the Acting Chief of Army Staff of Nepal on Tuesday. The president made the appointment as per the recommendation made by the cabinet last week.
According to the President´s Office, the appointment of Rana as Acting Chief of Army Staff will be effective from Friday, August 10, when incumbent CoAS Chhatra Man Singh Gurung will take a month-long customary leave.
Rana will take charge of the national army as its head after incumbent chief Gurung retires on September 8.
The president in his capacity as the supreme commander of the Nepal Army made the appointment on the recommendation of the cabinet.
General Gurung had recommended Rana for the post to the Defence Ministry. Earlier Rana was the chief of staff and the seniormost lieutenant general in the army.
Rana is the great grandson of Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher.
