Nefin's Sherpa says indigenous party soon

REPUBLICA

DHANKUTA, Aug 6: The general secretary of Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (Nefin) Aang Kaji Sherpa on Monday said indigenous leaders are making final preparations for announcing a new party on August 9.

"As major political parties have been taking actions against their indigenous leaders, we will announce a new socialist party on the occasion of the International Day of the World´s Indigenous Peoples," said Sherpa at a function in Dhankuta.

He claimed that senior indigenous leaders from Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML would also be accommodated in the new party.

Sherpa accused even the UCPN (Maoist) of sidelining the issues of indigenous peoples. "Although the Maoist party had earlier raised the issues of indigenous peoples, they have now shelved it," he added.

Sherpa stated that they would sweep aside the major political parties, if they did not correct their policies regarding the rights of indigenous peoples.

He said indigenous peoples will socially boycott the parties and leaders that oppose identity based federalism.
