Karnali highway remains blocked for a month

GOVINDA KC

DAILEKH, August 1: The only highway linking the remote Karnali zone remains obstructed for a month now due to landslides at several point along the highway. This has made life difficult for the people living in the remote areas as supply of food has been severely affected.

“The people here have to walk for two days to reach Kalikot. Life has become difficult,” said Nainbahadur Shahi, a local businessman.

Until a year ago, there was a functioning belly bridge that linked people of khikijeula of Kalikot to the highway. However, the bridge has collapsed after heavy rains. Then government had planned to build another bridge over Ramghat River but the plan is yet to materialize.

“Landslides have occurred at 10 different places in the past one month. The debris has not been cleared making it impossible for vehicles to pass through,” said a police personnel at Ram Karnali police station.

The police stated that around 50 kilometer of the highway has been affected due to the landslide.
