Koirala's move draws Deuba faction's ire

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, July 30: Sher Bahadur Deuba-led faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) has expressed strong reservations over the “unilateral move” of party president Sushil Koirala to appoint chiefs of various departments and zonal coordination committees.

A meeting of Deuba-aligned CWC members and former lawmakers held at Deuba´s residence in Budhanilakantha Sunday afternoon also concluded that the president´s move to form additional 12 departments in the party without holding consultations with them was unacceptable.

NC CWC member Prakash Sharan Mahat said the meeting concluded that the decisions taken by the president had also flouted the party´s statute. "The decision was neither taken through consensus in the party, nor do they seem to have followed the party´s statute," he said.

Mahat said many of the party leaders were appointed as chiefs of department or zonal coordination committees without asking them.
Deuba faction has decided to hold another meeting to chalk out strategy for moving ahead.

Participants of the meeting also said that there was discrimination in the appointment as leaders from Deuba faction were given responsibility to head relatively less important departments. "The responsibility has not been distributed on merit basis, but at the whims of party president," another leader close to Deuba said.
