  Jhalanath Khanal returns vehicle

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, July 27: CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal has returned the vehicle he had been using as a former prime minister to the government on Friday.

“The vehicle (Ba 6 Cha 1026) provided (to him) by the state as a former prime minister has been handed over to the Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar, effective from today,” reads a press statement issued by Ram Babu Adhikari, Khanal´s personal aide.

The statement also said the UML chairman and former prime minister took no other facilities except for the vehicle.

A day earlier, former prime minister and UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and Nepali Congress Vice-president Ram Chandra Paudel had returned the vehicles offered to them by the government.

Of late, there have been calls from various quarters that the government should not provide state facilities, including vehicles, to former VIPs, saying that would put unnecessary burden on state coffers.
