TAPLEJUNG, July 22: Accusing cadres of Nepali Congress (NC) of killing a member of their party, the CPN-Maoist activists in Panchthar have called an indefinite strike starting Sunday.
Gajendra Jabegu, an area committee member of the party, who sustained fatal injuries in an attack by unidentified assailants on July 10, died during the course of his treatment at Neuro Hospital in Biratnagar.
The strike enforcers have claimed that Jabegu was thrashed to death by NC cadres. They have demanded action against the guilty; martyr status for the victim and compensation for the bereaved family.
The strike enforcers have completely shut down the marketplaces and shops. Transportation services have also come to a grinding halt. Hundreds of passengers have been left stranded on the road.
The protestors have been rallying on the road in Phidim, the district headquarters, to make sure a total shutdown is enforced and have been chanting slogans against the perpetrators.
Laxmi Neupane, district secretary of the party, issuing a press statement has warned of a stern agitation if the government fails to nab the culprit and address their demand.
