SAMUNDRA POUDEL

(Update IV)
TANAHUN, July 16:
The death toll from the bus accident happened Monday morning along the Prithvi Highway in Dhading has risen to 16. Over 15 passengers have been injured in the mishap.

So far, the identities of seven victims have been established. Police said among those killed are Deepak Prasad Khanal, an employee at the Gajuri-based Gramin Bikas Bank, Shiva Bahadur Karki, a Nepal Army man, Koshish Ghimire and Ruku Magar of Sindhuli.

Likewise, Khop Bahadur Dhamala, Prithvi Maya BK and her daughter Pratikshya of Udaypur have also been killed in the mishap that took place near Krishnabhir, Dhusha-2, of the district at around 5:00 this morning.

The identities of the other deceased are yet to be established. The injured have been undergoing treatment at Star Hospital and Super Hospital in the capital. It is not clear how many passengers were on the bus when the incident occurred.

The ill-fated (Na 2 Kha 4951), heading to the capital from Katari of Udayapur, had swerved off the road and plunged into the Trishuli River. Speeding is assumed to be the cause of the accident.

The Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army along with locals have been carrying out rescue operation.

A day earlier, 39 people were killed and dozens injured when a bus carrying the pilgrims to Trivenidham veered off the road and fell into the Gandak canal in Kudiya of Nawalparasi district.
