KATHMANDU, June 10: A Joint Secretary level meeting of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is scheduled for June 27-28 in Dhaka to finalize necessary preparations to set up BIMSTEC Secretariat in Bangladesh.
Nepalese delegation comprising officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Finance Ministry will be led by MoFA Joint Secretary Arjun Bahadur Thapa in the meeting.
“The meeting will discuss in detail the issues involving the establishment of BIMSTEC Secretariat,” Thapa told Republica.
Though there has already been agreement to set up a secretariat in Bangladesh, the BIMSTEC member countries are yet to settle issues including the matter concerning expenses for running the secretariat, staffing, perks and facilities of the staffs and representation of member countries in the regional body.
Meanwhile, the BIMSTEC member countries have agreed on the name of former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Nepal, Sumith Nakandala, to head the BIMSTEC Secretariat for the first term.
