Nepal volleyball team off to China

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, June 8: Nepal Olympic Committee and National Sports Council on Friday separately bade farewell to Nepali beach volleyball players for participation in the Third Asian Beach Games to be held in Haiyang, China from June 16 to 22.

Six Nepali teams will compete in three different events -- beach volleyball, beach basketball and beach sports climbing -- of the Asian Beach Games.

Nepali volleyball teams will play with China on Friday as the preliminary rounds will start prior to the tournament. Three teams --two men´s and one women´s -- from Nepal are competing in the tournament.

Nepal Volleyball Association has sent winners of the First National Beach Games to participate in the tournament. But second position holders have also expressed their interest in participating in the tournament.

Nepal Volleyball Association President Dan Bahadur Tamang said, “Players are required to deposit cash in advance for participation in the tournament at their own cost. Only then does the association take the initiative for the participation of such players.”

Sanjay Aryal and Yem Magar, Nita Shah and Chuda Khadka and Bharat Shah and Chandra Kunwar are competing in the Third Asian Beach Games. Sudesh Rimal will coach the team during the games.

Yem Magar had earlier participated in the First Asian Beach Games. Magar said they would perform well in the games.

Magar´s teammate Sanjay Aryal said, “We trained for 10 days on the beach and hence are confident that we will perform well in the games,” adding “We will improve our ranking in the tournament.”

Chuda Khadka, however, said the team did not get enough time for training.

National Volleyball Captain Bharat Shah, who is competing in the games at own cost, said his team would do its best to win in the tournament.
