REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, June 8: A student leader belonging to All Nepal National Free Students´ Union (ANNFSU) was shot in Kathmandu on Friday.

Basanta Shahi, 29, the vice president of Amrit Science Campus unit of ANNFSU, received a bullet in his throat in a house at Naya Bazaar at around 7.30. Shahi has been admitted to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) for treatment.

According to police, Basanta Khatri, 26, who lives in Nakkhipot of Lalitpur district, fired a shot at Shahi while ostensibly learning to shoot from a pistol. Khatri has fled after shooting Shahi.

Shahi had spent Thursday night at a rented room of Bir Bahadur Rawat, 29, in Naya Bazaar area. Mukesh Nepali, 24, a student of Amrit Science Campus, was also with Shahi and Rawat.

On Friday morning, Khatri, who originally hails from Dhap VDC of Jumla district, also reached Rawat´s room. He took out a pistol from his bag. The four tried to shoot from the same pistol one by one. Shahi was injured when Khatri fired pointing the pistol at him.

Police have taken Rawat and Nepali under control for investigations. Khatri, who fled on the pretext of going out to call an ambulance, is absconding.

Nabina Lama, vice president of ANNFSU, has said that Shahi might have been attacked by his rivals of the same organization.

"It could be the result of intra-union rivalry," said Lama. According to Lama, the convention of the Amrit Science Campus unit of ANNFSU had started just three days ago. But, the closed-door session did not begin following a dispute which, Lama says, might have led to the attack on Shahi.
