KATHMANDU, June 8: Amidst growing controversy over November 22 as the date for the Constituent Assembly elections, the Election Commission on Thursday said the date would not be suitable for 139 village development committees in 16 mountain districts.
“Generally, election is not possible beyond Mangsir 15 (November 30) due to weather. But if we get early snow, the election will be impossible on the scheduled date in the mountainous region,” said Acting Chief Election Commissioner Neel Kantha Uprety.
Uprety said the time from mid-September till mid-November is not appropriate for elections as mountainous regions get snow during that period. As per Uprety, the appropriate season is from the third week of February till the third week of April.
Uprety, whose six year term will end before the announced election date, said the Election Commission needs at least four months for preparations after all the required constitutional and legal provisions are put in place.
