  Eight held for vandalism

KATHMANDU, May 22: Police held eight agitators in the capital on the third day of the general strike called by Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities on Tuesday.

A tourist shuttle was vandalized at Mahankal, Baudhha. Similarly, a vehicle of tourism ministry was vandalized at Thecho in Lalitpur despite being escorted by police. A vehicle carrying copies of Nagarik daily was also vandalized by banda enforcers in Kerkha, Jhapa.

Journalist Mukti Prasad Neupane was beaten up in Palpa while two cops were injured in a clash with demonstrators in Makawanpur. According to Nepal Police´s Central News Desk, there were reports of vandalism in Rupandehi, Kaski and Dhanusha.

Meanwhile, banda enforcers thrashed Palpa correspondent of Arthik Abhiyan daily Muktiram Neupane in Shitalpati, Tansen on Tuesday, reports Tek Narayan Bhattarai.

"They took me to a corner and thrashed me for being a journalist. They also took away my camera and mobile phone set," Neupane said. Investigation assistant of the Central Investigation Bureau in Palpa Lila Dhar Malla, who was with Neupane, was also beaten. The banda organizers, issuing a press statement, however, claimed that the security person and journalist were beaten for their suspicious activities.

Our correspondent Dilip Paudel reports that a group of banda enforcers vandalized the District Forest Office in Baglung on Tuesday. The protestors vandalized office furniture and smashed window panes, and even manhandled officials and hurled abuses, DFO official Ram Chandra Kandel said.

A meeting of editors of Jhapa-based newspapers on Tuesday decided to shut down their publications for two days protesting the attack on press, according to our Jhapa correspondent Raju Adhikari.

Meanwhile, Biratngar remained tense on Tuesday following clashes between banda enforcers and locals on Monday evening, according to Khilanath Dhakal. The banda organizers had thrashed locals at Pushpalal Chowk after some unidentified persons pelted stones at their protest rally Monday evening. Locals encircled the District Administration Office, Morang on Tuesday demanding security following the clashes.

Ambulance operators also protested at Bhrikuti Chowk of Biratnagar for one hour parking their ambulances on the street demanding security. Driver of an ambulance (Me 1 Cha 834) Laxmi Mishra was thrashed by banda enforcers at Bhaunne, Morang along the East-West Highway on Monday.

Driver Mishra is in critical condition with serious head injuries and broken legs. He has been taken to Siliguri, India on the referral of BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan. "The banda enforcers have been harassing patients, including women in labor, and forcing the attendants out of the ambulances," said ambulance driver Padam Subedi who took part in the protest in Biratnagar.

Similarly, banda enforcers vandalized a taxi at Ganesh Chowk, Panchthar on Tuesday. The taxi carrying pilgrims was returning from Pathibhara temple.

Meanwhile, Deepa Ale of Sagarmatha Television was brutally thrashed by banda enforcers in Kohalpur-2, Ramnagar Monday night.
