Journos flay govt for failing to protect press freedom
KATHMANDU, April 11: Journalists have alleged that the government has failed to end impunity and protect freedom of expression. They also took the government to task for failing to make public the murderers of Jhapa-based journalist Yadav Paudel.
Nepal Press Union said though they picketed the District Administration Office, Kathmandu calling for the immediate arrest of the culprits and the Jhapa District Administration expressed commitment to arrest the guilty to the Union´s Mission Team reached Jhapa to study fact about Paudel killing, the administration has not been able to arrest Paudel´s killers so far, rued the participants at the picketing programme.
They alleged that the police administration seems to be hatching conspiracies to protecting the guilty of the incident by distorting the facts of the incident.
Shobhakar Parajuli, founding member of the Union and lawmaker of the Nepali Congress, said the situation of impunity and providing political protection to the guilty was unfortunate.
Speaking at the programme, President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Shiva Gaunle, demanded that the government bring the guilty of the murder case to book.
Chairman of the Union, Kiran Pokharel, said it was a matter of shame that the government has still not been able to arrest journalist Paudel´s murderers although knowing that the case was premeditated. He demanded that the government make the guilty public, provide necessary compensation to the victim´s family, and ensure the proper work environment to the journalists.
The security force rounded up the journalists taking part in the rally advancing for staging the picketing.
