  Lissanevitch, Karki pair claim lawn-tennis gold

KATHMANDU, Feb 28: Aslesha Lissanevitch and Bibhuti Karki´s pair of Central Region on Tuesday won gold medal in the women´s doubles lawn tennis during the Sixth National Games held at the Satdobato Tennis Court, Lalitpur.

Lissanevitch and Karki registered a comfortable victory over the pair of Kalpana Thapa and Bijisha Shrestha of Central 6-1, 6-1 in the second match of Round robin. Altogether three pairs had participated in the women´s double category.

Thapa and Shrestha´s pair will compete against Ganga Sharma and Bimala Basyal´s pair from Western Region for the decider of second and third place on Wednesday.

After conforming the gold with second straight victory, Lissanevitch said that it was her dream to win gold in doubles during National Games. "Winning gold is everyone´s dream and it has made me very proud and it is priceless."

Regarding her first ever partnership with Karki, Lissanevitch said, "Though we paired for the first time, we coordinated very well and together won the gold. She is strong singles player and demonstrated her abilities. I wish to pair with her in future as well and it was great experience today."

In the women´s singles, Lissanevitch and Kalpana Thapa will compete for the gold. In the first semifinal, Lissanevitch saw off Bijisha Shrestha 6-1, 6-0 while Thapa overcame Bibhuti Karki 4-6, 7-6, 6-0.

In the men´s singles, Nepal number one Kumar Adhikari of Armed Police Force (APF) beat Anil Shahi of Western 6-1, 6-2, Shree Ram Magar of Central edged past Rajesh Chhetri of Central 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, Santosh Khatri of Central overcame Maheswor Tiwari of APF 6-3, 6-4 and Jitendra Pariyar of Central thumped Chhewang Lama 6-0, 6-2 and qualified for the semifinal.

In the men´s doubles, pair of Santosh Khatri and Chhewang Lama of Central, Shakti Sharma and Anil Shahi of Western, Raju Shrestha and Raju Shrestha of Western, Kumar Adhikari and Maheswor Tiwari of APF and Shree Ram Magar and Jitendra Pariyar of Central advanced to the semifinal with win.


Shooting

Nepal Police Club (NPC) dominated shooting with two gold medals in team event on Tuesday. NPC clinched gold medal in women´s 10 m air rifle and women´s 10 m air pistol.

Out of total 1200 points, NPC earned 1136 points to clinched gold in 10m air rifle. Olympian Phool Maya Kyapchhaki, Asmita Rai and Durga Sinjali had participated in the team event for NPC. Eastern Region satisfied finished with silver scoring 1048 points. Khusbu Chaudhary, Archana Shah and Tula Devi Khadka were the players of Eastern team. With 1037 points Mid-western Region comprising of Sita Singh, Deep Shova Thapa Magar and Basanti KC of Mid-Western secured bronze.

In the 10m air pistol, NPC clinched gold with 1033 points. Saraswoti Baniya, Sabita Basnet and Sima Tuladhar were the member of NPC. Mid-Western clinched silver medal with 1002 points. Krishna Thapa, Shahin Pravin Ansari and Bishnu Kumari Pun had participated from Mid-Western. With 972 points Central Region consisting of Rubina Shrestha, Anju Gautam and Mira Lama bagged bronze medal.

The finalist of the 10m air pistol and 10m air rifle will be announced on Wednesday.
