  SPORTS BRIEFS: NSC seeks Rs 100m for SAG

KATHMANDU, Jan 3: National Sports Council (NSC) Vice President Pitambar Timilsina and Member Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary informed Finance Minister Surendra Pandey on Sunday that the NSC requires a minimum of Rs 100.5 million for the 11th South Asian Games (SAG).


The NSC had earlier requested the ministry to provide Rs 115.6 million but the ministry had written to the NSC to lessen the demand.

The NSC officials met the minister on Sunday as the ministry had written to the NSC that it cannot provide even the amended demand for Rs 100.5 million and told them to further reduce the amount by Rs 10 million.

A press release issued by the NSC after the meeting stated that the minister´s response was positive but the final decision will be taken later.


East Bengal win Federation Cup

KATHMANDU, Jan 3: East Bengal won the title of Federation Cup Football Tournament held in the Indian city of Guwahati on Sunday.

East Bengal defeated Shillong Lajong, the I-league club for Nepali striker Anil Gurung, 3-0 in tiebreaker to regain the trophy. Anil and two other Lajong players missed their spot kicks in the tiebreaker.

The game ended goalless after extra time, but Yusif Yakubu, Nirmal Chhetri, and Sanju Pradhan scored in the shootout to give East Bengal the win.


U-16 National Cricket from today

KATHMANDU, Jan 3: Boost U-16 National Cricket Tournament will kick off on Monday in Kathmandu. This is the first time that U-16 national tournament is being held.

Nepal followed suit of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to introduce U-16 cricket tournament after a dispute regarding the age of now defunct U-15 and U-17 teams.

Altogether six regional teams from all over the country will participate in the event whose final will be held on January 13. Colored dress and white ball will be used in the tournament.

The players with outstanding performance in the tournament will get an opportunity to participate in the ACC U-16 Elite Cup to be held from March 8-18 in Kathmandu.


Int´l taekwondo in December

KATHMANDU, Jan 3: Maitri Taekwondo Dojang, Lalitpur is organizing the Eighth edition of International Open Friendship Taekwondo Championship on December 10 and 11 at the Dasharath Stadium covered hall.

The championship will feature competitions in eight different weight categories for both men and women. It will feature competitions in both sparring and kata.

According to the organizers, more than 300 players from countries including Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Kuwait, USA, Mexico, Canada, South Korea, Guatemala and Vietnam will participate in the championship.

A 13-member main organizing committee with Kedar Maharjan as coordinator, and 15 sub committees have been formed to organize the championship successfully.
