  SPORTS BRIEFS: Raj, Krishna, Ashmita win chess titles

KATHMANDU, Dec 19: Raj Prajapati, Krishna Prajapati and Ashmita Dhaubhadel clinched the titles of the First National Khwopring Inter School Chess Tournament on Saturday.


Raj, on behalf of the hosts Khwopring English Academy, defeated Nawal Ghimire of Tara Punj School in the seventh round to collect as many points and finished first in the junior boys´ section.

Likewise, in the senior boys´ section, Krishna accumulated 6.5 points from seven matches to win the title. Krishna shared half point with Anil Shilpakar of June School in the seventh round after a draw.

Ashmita edged Meera Kakshapati in the final round and scored 5 points to claim the first position in the senior girls´ section.


Xavier into Akhil Cup Football quarterfinals

KATHMANDU, Dec 19: Xavier International College entered the quarterfinals of the Akhil Cup Football 2009 on Saturday.

Xavier secured a berth from pool C in the tournament organized by the Bagmati zonal committee of All Nepal Free Students´ Union. Nepal Commerce Campus and Patan Multiple Campus have already entered the quarterfinals.

Xavier defeated SS College 3-0 in the match played at Chyasal Grounds on Saturday. Xavier opened their account in the 18th minute when Manish Lama scored. Bikram Lama doubled the score in the 46th minute while Bibhushan KC added one more in the 55th minute of the match.



In the first match of the day, Pinnacle College thrashed Koteshwar Multiple Campus 14-0 in a one-sided match. Prakash Shahi and Suraj Budhapirthi each completed a five-goal milestone during the match. Keshav Sherchan struck twice while Ramesh Shahi and Basanta Gurung scored one each for the winners.

Likewise, Golden Gate International College beat Pentagon College 3-0. Ganesh Khadka opened the goal tally for Golden Gate in the 19th minute. Bishal Rai doubled the lead in the 42nd minute while Rabi Thapa added one more in the last minute of the first half.
