KATHMANDU, April 20: Outraged by the “government attack” on the state army and other state organs, main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has called an emergency meeting of its Central Working Committee (CWC) Tuesday morning to discuss the issues. [break]

NC Spokesperson Arjun Narsingh KC told myrepublica.com that the CWC will meet at the party office after a delegation led by NC acting president Sushil Koirala calls on President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, who is also the supreme commander of the Nepal Army (NA), at 8am.

“We have also called an all-party meeting in the afternoon,” said KC. Monday’s meeting of parliament has been postponed until Tuesday afternoon after the main opposition boycotted the House meeting in protest against the government decision to seek clarification from army chief Rookmangud Katawal on a number of issues. The Kathmandu air is abuzz with the government planning to sack the army chief.

The government Monday morning sought Katawal’s clarification within 24 hours on three issues: the NA going ahead with fresh recruitment in the state army despite government orders not to do so, keeping eight Generals at work even after they were retired by the government, and not sending NA players in the events participated by the PLA during the national games.

“Apart from the government letter to the army chief, the CWC will discuss government’s blatant attacks in the media, independent judiciary and bureaucracy. The government has been demoralising, sabotaging and polluting the state army,” said KC. “Both suspension and sacking of the army chief won’t be acceptable for our party.”

He also accused the Maoist-led government of inciting the Maoist People’s Liberation Army (PLA) against the state army.
