Monsoon hits over 160 flights

POKHARA, Sept 5: Regular flights to Kathmandu and Jomsom from Pokhara have been obstructed because of this year´s monsoon rains. A hundred and sixty regular flights operated by Yeti, Buddha, Guna and Nepal Airlines were canceled, respective airlines companies told myrepublica.com.



The airlines said that the cancellations had cost them around Rs 10 million. [break]



A Pokhara Airport source also confirmed that due to the monsoon rains, dozens of flight to Kathmandu and Jomsom from Pokhara have been halted. One airport official mentioned that because of the continued rainfall, flights between Pokhara and Jomsom had been stopped.



Yeti and Nepal Airlines bore the brunt of the losses in the route. Of the companies, Yeti Airlines planes would have made 60 flights in August while Nepal Airlines would have made 33 flights.



"In the last three months Yeti Airlines took a big hit due the cancellation of 70 flights between Pokhara and Jomsom," Yeti´s station manager Amrit Jung GC told myrepublica.com. Besides that, 17 flights between Pokhara and Kathmandu were also canceled resulting in massive losses to the company, he added.



He also said that the flights would have had hundred percent occupancy because of tourism attraction of Jomsom in monsoon. Occupancy of the Pokhara-Kathmandu route used to be 70 percent, he said.
